pMembers of the U of G community were in downtown Guelph today to wave signs and chant on behalf of the United Way of Guelph and Wellington. /p pLast week, the county-wide organization projected a shortfall in its 2008 fundraising campaign, so organizers, including president Alastair Summerlee, who chairs the regional United Way campaign, wanted to make sure the media and the public know how the current financial crisis is affecting the most vulnerable people in our community. /p p#8220;It will deepen the crisis in our community if the United Way has to cut funding to its member agencies,#8221; says Animal and Poultry Science Prof. Jim Atkinson, who is co-chair of the U of G United Way campaign. #8220;With the layoffs, cutbacks and other economic challenges facing the community, even the $2.6 million we hope to raise will be spread rather thin in terms of the need.#8221; /p pHe and his co-chairs Jennifer Beehler of the Department of Clinical Studies and business student Suba Naganathan are still confident the University campaign will reach its $440,000 goal. /p p#8220;With our total currently standing at $401,000, we are going to need a push over the last two weeks of our campaign to achieve that,#8221; says Beehler. She notes that the University's fundraising drive makes up 17 per cent of the overall goal for Wellington County. /p p#8220;We've already had great support from staff and faculty, students and retirees, but we can't let up now. If you've been thinking about the United Way but haven't acted yet, please do it now. If you've bought a raffle ticket or voted for a University Idol, vote again and find another ticket to buy. We can't stop the global financial crisis, but we can exceed our United Way goal and make life a little better for thousands of people in our community.#8221; /p pThe U of G campaign officially wraps up at the closing lunch Dec. 2. pThere is no change in the number of confirmed E. coli cases, which remain at seven, all of whom are U of G students. It's believed the students became ill between Oct. 21 and Nov. 6, and that the probable cases Wellington-Dufferin-Guelph Public Health continues to monitor also fall within that time frame. /p pAs a result, U of G will resume serving lettuce on campus today. The University voluntarily stopped serving all lettuce on campus Nov. 8 as a precautionary measure. /p pPublic Health has expanded its E. coli investigation to all of Wellington-Dufferin county and is following a number of probable cases, so the number of confirmed cases may rise as test results come back. /p pThe Canadian Food Inspection Agency continues to investigate a possible source of the outbreak./p pU of G was first told that Public Health was investigating an E. coli outbreak on campus Nov. 6. The strain, identified as E. coli 0157, has been linked to other outbreaks in the Halton, Niagara and Waterloo regions./p pThe University is deeply concerned for the health of those who have become ill and continues to take this situation very seriously./p pFor more information visit the Public Health a href="http://www.wdghu.org"website/a. Information on E. coli is also available by visiting the University's Food Safety Network a href="http://www.foodsafetynetwork.ca"website/a or by calling the network's toll free phone line at 1-866-503-7638. br / br / /pdiv a href="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~f/uoguelph?a=QZP0N"img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~f/uoguelph?i=QZP0N" border="0"/img/a /div

pHorse owners will be able to determine the risk of their animals catching an infectious disease and gather information about infection control thanks to two new online initiatives from the University of Guelph./p pThe first is an online calculator that allows horse owners to punch in their management practices and learn their animals' risk levels. The second initiative is a blog by Ontario Veterinary College (OVC) researchers that provides information about various equine infectious diseases, along with practical tips on disease prevention and control./p pThe Biosecurity Risk Calculator will be launched this week at the Ontario Equestrian Federation Conference. Developed by Equine Guelph in partnership with Vétoquinol Canada, the online tool measures both risk and prevention./p p"The calculator gives horse owners a good starting point by showing the potential risks currently present on their farm and the most practical ways to decrease that risk," said Gayle Ecker, senior manager of Equine Guelph. Having a biosecurity protocol is important to reducing the risk of spreading infectious disease on any horse farm, added Caroline Desforges, biosecurity and equine product manager with Vétoquinol Canada. /p pThe calculator will be available through the a href="http://www.equineguelph.ca/"Equine Guelph /awebsite. Founded in 2003, Equine Guelph is the horse owner's centre at U of G. Supported and overseen by equine industry groups, it's dedicated to improving the health and well-being of horses and helps connect members of the equine industry with expertise at OVC./p pMeanwhile, "a href="http://www.equidblog.com/"EQUIDBLOG/a" aims to provide information and insight about equine infectious diseases to horse owners and veterinarians. The site is co-ordinated by Prof. Scott Weese and Maureen Anderson of OVC's Department of Pathobiology. They are specialists in large-animal internal medicine with expertise in infectious diseases and infection control./p pInfectious diseases are prevalent in equine medicine, Weese said. "The average horse owner commonly encounters infectious disease questions and problems, ranging from decisions about vaccination and deworming to serious illnesses in their horses," he said./p p"We wanted to design a website where we could provide balanced and unbiased information in various forms, ranging from short updates about current issues to detailed information sheets about diseases or descriptions of infection control protocols. "/p pWeese and Anderson create blog posts every few days about timely topics related to infectious disease topics, including items in the news, outbreaks that are occurring internationally and general commentary about infectious diseases and infection control. Recent posts have included diverse topics ranging from vaccination and deworming to equine herpesvirus in the United States to the use of honey for treating infections. All the information is written and reviewed by experts in the field. /p pLast spring, Weese and Anderson started a similar blog, "a href="http://www.wormsandgermsblog.com/"Worms and Germs/a," to educate people about zoonotic diseases — those that can be transmitted between animals and humans — as well as to provide general information about topics related to animal health and pet care./pdiv a href="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~f/uoguelph?a=0DOCN"img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~f/uoguelph?i=0DOCN" border="0"/img/a /div

Today's piece highlights why and how Rubio became interested in Montgomery and in writing her biography./p pemThe Gift of Wings/em was also reviewed this week in the ema href="http://www.theglobeandmail.com/servlet/story/LAC.20081115.BKLUCY15/TPStory/Entertainment"Globe and Mail/a./em/p pRubio spent more than two decades doing research for emThe Gift of Wings/em, including extensive interviews with people who knew Montgomery best, including her son, friends, maids and relatives, all of whom are now deceased. She also travelled to Poland and Scotland collecting information. The book is an intimate narrative that covers Montgomery's childhood in Prince Edward Island, her adolescence, her legal fights as a world-famous author and difficulties with marriage, motherhood and her celebrity./p pRubio is one of the pre-eminent Montgomery experts in the world, having been asked by Montgomery's son, Stuart Macdonald, to edit his mother's personal journals.
